Hi, I’m Liz,
and I climb mountains.
I have a PhD in neuroscience and am currently a Clinical & Translational Science Fellow in neuroimmunology.
I have 10+ years of biomedical research experience working on projects ranging from risk factors that impact neurodevelopment during pregnancy, to neuroimmune dysfunction at the blood brain barrier in response to metabolic disruptions.
I am passionate about fighting systemic inequities, and take on projects outside of academia to do just that. Through health research and personal experience, I’ve learned the positive impact that fresh air, physical activity, and a sense of belonging can have on human health. I also know that socially innovative initiatives tackle systemic inequities, in addition to boosting confidence and well-being.
I am first generation Mexican-American, and I’m from a family of farm laborers. My parents immigrated from Jalisco to the US in their early 20’s, like my grandfathers did seasonally through the Braceros Program. My parents set permanent roots in California, making me the first US citizen in the family. I am also the first to earn a college degree, and grew up bilingual & bicultural. I have a people-centered ethos and inherited a strong sense of community and resiliency through cultural wisdom.
Access to higher education in addition to a strong cultural identity, puts me in a unique position to challenge the status quo and reimagine what we think is possible. This translates into the creative & innovative approach I bring into my professional career, advocacy work, and personal projects.
More about me.
I love learning. Especially about global and social complexities.
I really like my dog, Loki.
Climbing is fun. So is running, and dancing, and yoga. I think mindful movement in all its forms can be really powerful.
My most formative mountain experiences include Mt. Shuksan, Tahoma (Mt. Rainier), Citlaltépetl (Pico de Orizaba), Iztaccihuatl, Torres del Paine, Fitz Roy Range, the Himalayan Khumbu, and la Cordillera Real de Bolivia.
Things I probably take too seriously: Formula 1 (Ferrari forever), Fantasy Football (Go Birds), mountaineering, social inequities.
Things I’m trying to get better at: trail running, cooking, science communication, community engagement.
Other life goals: own a ranch in Mexico, become a professor, make bi-annual visits to Nepal.
Mindset: I hope to always be receptive to new challenges and opportunities for growth.
